Built-in Targeting Calculator Makes Hand-held Weather Meter A Breakthrough, Compact Ballistics Tool

Kestrel® Pocket Weather® Meters partners with Horus Vision® to release a breakthrough ballistics instrument that eliminates the need for a PDA in long-distance shooting.

BOOTHWYN, PA… Nielsen-Kellerman®, manufacturer and distributor of Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters, introduces a new line of the rugged hand-held weather monitoring device equipped with an integrated ballistics calculator, the Kestrel Ballistics WeatherTM Tracker with Horus® ATrag® Software.

Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters and Horus Vision have partnered to provide a powerful shooting tool that combines the critical environmental data and targeting software solutions required for precision shooting — all in one four-ounce pocket-sized unit. Previously, shooters would need to obtain environmental data from a Kestrel meter and then input that data into a PDA loaded with Horus ATrag ballistics software. Now, the Kestrel Ballistics Weather Tracker with Horus ATrag Software contains all of the necessary data and solutions in one device to minimize user workload and distraction. Plus, the Kestrel meter is IP67 waterproof and MIL-STD-810F rugged, allowing users to avoid the expense and weight of a ruggedized PDA.

The new unit allows users to load and customize multiple guns and rounds from the extensive proprietary Horus database. Simple, intuitive screens allow the user to create up to six targets customized for location, distance, direction, declination and winds. The Kestrel meter’s highly accurate measuring and averaging of wind and digital compass for target bearing and wind direction assists in defining the target winds. Once these parameters are set, the Kestrel meter takes over – tracking the current met data and automatically updating the firing solution using Horus ATrag advanced proprietary algorithms and taking coriolis and spin drift into account.  No additional user input is required.

Switch out of  Horus mode and the Kestrel Ballistics Weather Tracker provides the full suite of Kestrel 4500 weather measurements and data logging.  Instantly measure and log a multitude of conditions: wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, heat stress, barometric pressure, altitude, density altitude, crosswind and more. This is the one tool to keep long-range shooters safe and informed whatever their environment. Plus, with optional integrated Bluetooth® data transfer capabilities, users can conveniently and wirelessly upload environmental data.

The Kestrel Ballistics Weather Tracker with Horus ATrag Software will be available early summer 2010.

Kestrel Pocket Weather are designed, developed, built, tested and supported in the USA. Nielsen-Kellerman’s Kestrel Weather division has been researching, developing and manufacturing technically advanced portable weather instruments for more than a decade and owns multiple patents on their unique features. Kestrel Meters are MIL-STD-810F rugged, IP-67 waterproof and field-proven through millions of hours of operation in extreme environments.  Every Kestrel Meter is backed by a five-year warranty and customer satisfaction guarantee.

The Kestral with built in Ballistic Calculator sounds great. Which model will it be – orwill there be a completely new speciality meter like the 4300..???
Also what sort of cost will we be looking at..??

  5. monica says:

Hi Rob. The Kestrel with Horus Ballistics will be available in the 4500 NV series in both Olive Drab and Desert Tan. The cost will be more than our current units available because of the addition of fully integrated software and its ability to replace a ruggedized PDA. We’ll have more details coming soon! Please check back on our website, http://www.facebook.com/KestrelMeters, twitter.com/KestrelChick for the all latest! Thanks, Monica Devlin

I have been contemplating a 4500 AND a ballistics calculator AND and ABC watch (Suunto Core, Casio Pathfinder, etc) then I saw your add in SWAT magazine a few months ago. That teaser you put in there got me thinking this new device could be the answer to a multitude of devices for long-range shooting, hunting and backpacking. Looking forward to further updates!!

  9. Sam says:

Will it be possible to retrofit an NV4500? I just bought one a few months back.

  10. Hello Monica,

My name is Bill Siegoff i am a competition shooter in Australia i currently have a 4500NV and use a pda with ballistics software. could you please keep me updated when the usint is to become available. Also i write technical articles for the Australian Target Rifle magazine and would love to write an article on this new unit. Any updates on when this will be available?

  12. Sam says:

Will it be possible to have a recently purchased NV4500 retrofit?

  13. monica says:

    Hi Sam,

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to alter the Kestrel for fully integrated ATrag software because it involves more than a code update. However, we do offer a customer care discount program for trading in old units. We’re working on getting the Kestrel with Horus Vision customer care information up on our web. Here’s a link to our current program: http://www.nkhome.com/kestrel/warranty/ or you may e-mail me at mdevlin@nkhome.com.
    Thanks!
