Kestrel with Horus Ballistics: Firing Off FAQs

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The upcoming release of the all new Kestrel Pocket Weather Tracker with Horus Ballistics (yep, I can say that all in one breath) has triggered a decent amount of questions, comments and cyber high-fives from you. I wanted to share the latest information on the arrival of this highly anticipated Kestrel meter and answer some of your most common questions. If I missed any, please post them below and I’ll get back to you.

Check out this video of the Kestrel crew on the shooting range with the new Kestrel with Horus Ballistics.

So, when can I get it?

The official release date is scheduled for this fall.

We make all of our own products right here at the Kestrel headquarters so we’re on top of the entire production process. We’re also perfectionists. We refuse to let you have products that aren’t up to extremely high standards. We put our Kestrel meters up against stringent NIST standards, rigid military drop-test specs, and IP-67 & MIL-STD-810 protection from dust and water damage. If you don’t know what those codes stand for, it’s basically a fancy, super official way of saying a product is darn TOUGH. Let’s just say the Kestrel is the Clint Eastwood of hand-held weather meters, or Chuck Norris even. What that means for you, is that we conduct robust rounds of beta testing and updates to ensure the product that reaches your hand is top notch. Check back for schedule updates or changes.

Which Kestrel meters will be available with Horus Ballistics software?

The Kestrel 4500 NV series will be available with Horus Vision ballistics. The Kestrel 4500 is the only model to give wind direction, which is important for long-range shooting and a perfect complement to an integrated targeting solutions system. The Night Vision (NV) series is the preferred model for the military because of its dim red back light that does not obscure or bleach out your natural vision in low light situations. Nocturnal or early AM hunters like this one too for the same reason.

You will also have the option to choose a model with Bluetooth data transfer or without the wireless technology. With the Bluetooth technology, you would be able to wirelessly transmit all of the Kestrel weather data to a laptop for analysis or long-term documentation. For example, tracking and comparing shooting competition performance against range conditions or for training purposes.

The available colors will be in Olive Drab and Desert Tan.

How much do they cost?

We will have more info on this going forward so be sure to check back at our site and this blog. You could also follow me on Twitter @KestrelChick. Fan us on Facebook and of course shoot me an e-mail: mdevlin@nkhome.com.

The Kestrel with Horus Ballistics will certainly cost less than the price of a ruggedized PDA and Kestrel meter combo. This new Kestrel meter eliminates the need for a PDA- all the critical data you need is right in the unit!

Can I upgrade my current unit to include Horus Vision software?

No. The Kestrel with Horus Vision software was specially designed and built to support the integrated ballistics solutions along with the Kestrel platform you’re used to- environmental data, storage and wireless data transfer capabilities. Sometimes we’re able to offer an upgrade option if it only involves a code change but in this case that is not possible. We do have a Customer Care Discount program where you may trade in your current Kestrel for credit towards the new Kestrel Weather Tracker with Horus Vision.

Here is a link to more info on Customer Care Discount program.

When Should You Replace Your Cox Box?

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Coaches often struggle with decisions such as what workouts are most beneficial or which athletes should sit where to make their top boat go as fast as it can, but rarely do they think about equipment until it breaks. This is particularly true of the Cox Box. These trusty round soldiers go in and out of the boathouse multiple times a day, doing their job, sometimes getting a little finicky if they’ve had a long time since their last checkup, until finally they give up and stop working.  Now the Coach or equipment manager is faced with the question, “should I buy a new Cox Box or should I invest in having this old one repaired one more time?”  To help our customers make an informed decision, we analyzed our repair database to give you some solid figures. The math is pretty clear:  if your Cox Box is six or more years old, or has already one battery replacement, it makes more sense to upgrade to a new style Cox Box than to sink more money into the old one.

Anyone who has sent in a metal can style Cox Box knows that the cost to open and clean the unit and replace the battery is $145. The cost to replace the battery and repair damaged connections and parts is $245 (about half the price of the Cox Box itself). However, even if we repair failed parts, many others are still the original equipment with hours of use and even abuse. Although we give the unit a full functional check after repair, there’s no way we can guarantee that a part that wasn’t replaced won’t fail a few months later.

An analysis of Cox Boxes returned to NK in the last year showed that the majority of Cox Boxes we repaired were six to seven years old.  Most of these units were on their second trip through our shop (with steady use, sealed can Cox Box batteries provide three to four years of full capacity performance.) Many of these repairs also included a P5 and a BNC replacement, putting them at the $245 level. Many customers considered a trade-in at this point, but opted for the repair in the belief that it was the more cost-effective approach. Further analysis shows that this decision may not adequately account for the financial benefits of upgrading to the new style Cox Box.

One of our major goals with the new Cox Box was to minimize the scheduled or expected maintenance, and to maximize the years of use with no trips back to the NK shop. The user-replaceable batteries allow you to just buy a new battery pack after a few years of hard use, and the durable P2 microphone connector reduces maintenance and repairs on the Cox Box and the microphone.  And remember, when you trade up to a new Cox Box, you get a brand-new two-year warranty on the entire unit.  So, we compared the total cost of ownership over fourteen years of doing that second repair versus moving up sooner to a new Cox Box:

Scenario 1:  Repair Original Cox Box Twice, then Trade In
Year Action Cost Warranty
0 Purchase CB & Microphone $ 498 2
3 Replace CB Battery $ 145
6 Replace Microphone $ 99
6 Replace CB Battery and Repair $ 245
8 Trade In CB & Mic on New Style CB & Mic $ 502 2
11 Purchase new Battery Pack $ 125
14 Residual Value (Trade-in) $ (126)
TOTAL COST  /  YEARS OF WARRANTY $ 1,488 4
Scenario 2:  Repair Original Cox Box Once, Then Trade In
Year Action Cost Warranty
0 Purchase CB & Microphone $ 498 2
3 Replace CB Battery $ 145
6 Trade In CB & Mic on New Style CB & Mic $ 502 2
9 Purchase new Battery Pack $ 125
12 Trade In CB & Mic on New CB & Mic $ 491 2
14 Residual Value (2/3 unit, 1/3 battery) $ (208)
TOTAL COST / YEARS OF WARRANTY $ 1,553 6
Cost Difference $ 65

As you can see, the total cost differs less than the cost of one unisuit or a few box lunches. Plus, you’ve enjoyed two more years of warranty coverage and the benefits of the new Cox Box including longer battery life, battery status indicator, ability to swap to a back-up battery, rubber bumper protection, lighter weight and full buoyancy.

While we cannot guarantee that every Cox Box will experience exactly the same life-cycle as we have outlined above, this represents the most common scenario we see with Cox Box units in typical two to three season use. We hope this illustration is helpful next time your club or school is facing the “trade-in or fix” question.

(Note also that the typical life span cost of a Cox Box and microphone is only about $100 a year for hours and hours of use.)

Inc. Magazine Names NK in Top 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in US

Inc. Magazine Unveils Its Fourth Annual Exclusive List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies—the Inc. 5000

Nielsen-Kellerman Company Ranks No. 4425 on the 2010 Inc. 5000 with Three-Year Sales Growth of 20%

NEW YORK, August 24, 2010Inc. magazine today ranked Nielsen-Kellerman NO. 4425 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

Nielsen-Kellerman Company designs, manufactures and distributes waterproof instruments for active lifestyles and technical applications across three brands: Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters, NK electronics for the sport of rowing, and ClearNav soaring instruments. For more than thirty years, NK has been known worldwide for its waterproof speed measurement, timing and audio systems for competitive rowers. Virtually every shell at the 2008 Athens Olympic games carried NK equipment. Nielsen-Kellerman’s Kestrel Weather division has been researching, developing and manufacturing technically advanced portable weather instruments for more than a decade and owns multiple patents on their unique features. This is the second consecutive year NK has made the Inc. 5000 list.

The 2010 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on Inc.com, serves as a unique illustration of the profound changes taking place in the U.S. economy. The Government Services sector showed the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33 percent from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202 percent gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The fastest-growing sector by median revenue growth was Real Estate, now just a tiny group of 38 young, small companies, which showed 231 percent median growth over the period. (There were 121 Real Estate firms on the inaugural Inc. 5000 in 2007.) Business Products & Services is the top industry by number of companies on the list (640) and total revenue ($80.7 billion), while Health is the biggest by total employment (287,726  jobs).

Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. The effects of the recession are seen, however, in the median three-year growth rate, which dropped to 96 percent from last year’s 126 percent. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list. With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, policymakers and business leaders will do well to look to the Inc. 5000 companies for fresh ideas on achieving growth and creating jobs.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on www.inc.com/5000.
